what is DIA BEETUS?!

I don't want to be so ignorant to think that all of you reading this already know what Diabetes is...SO in case your one of the ones that needs a little science lesson, I AM HERE FOR U.

I will give you an actual science book definition and then I will try to break it down to better explain it.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas are mistakenly destroyed by the body’s immune system. T1D seems to have a genetic component and can be diagnosed early in life but also in adulthood. Its causes are not fully known, and there is currently no cure. People with T1D are dependent on injected or pumped insulin to survive.

So basically a person with Type One Diabetes has a pancreas that doesn't produce/doesn't fully produce insulin. Insulin is the liquid secreted by the pancreas to help regulate blood sugar. Insulin helps regulate blood sugar levels. People with type 1 diabetes rely on insulin from an outside source to help manage their blood-glucose levels. The food they eat, stress, illness, excitement and several other factors can all affect glucose levels. T1D's are insulin dependent, meaning we must get insulin in someway (pumps, pods, shots, ect) TO LIVE.

Have you ever heard jokes about diabetes? Ya know, like oh you ate too much sugar as a kid?? Or when someone says "diabetes" when they have a plate full of chocolate cake? We have all heard those jokes and as a T1D it really sucks to hear things like that because IT'S NOT TRUE!!! There's absolutely nothing a person can do to prevent or cure T1D.

Signs of T1D

  • Frequent urination

  • Increased thirst

  • Dry mouth

  • Itchy or dry skin

  • Increased appetite

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Yeast infections
